What The Sandbox?

What Is The Sandbox?

The Sandbox is a decentralized NFT game on the Ethereum blockchain, in which users create digital items in the form of NFT and develop their own game worlds based on them. The gameplay is based on the popular game Minecraft, so The Sandbox is a game metaworld where you can move from one world to another.

The Sandbox was created by the developers of the startup Pixowl Inc. in 2011. In 2013, the development of The Sandbox game for mobile devices began, it can be considered the ancestor of the modern version. In 2018, The Sandbox was bought by Animoca Brands to launch the NFT version of buhs. The company is headquartered in Hong Kong, with staff from around the world working remotely.

The project is supported by companies such as Adidas, Atari, SoftBank, and famous musicians such as SnoopDogg and Avenged Sevenfold.

The Sandbox is currently one of the most popular and dynamically developing NFT games. Soon, the game is expected to be released on other platforms, such as macOS.

At the time of the ICO in August 2020, the price of the SAND token was £0.008; in December 2021, SAND is capitalized at £3,592,760,353 with a price per token of £3.93.

Should You Pay Attention to This Game?

Despite the fact that the alpha version of the game came out relatively recently, interest in this project from players is unusually high. This is due to the fact that The Sandbox has interested many companies that have bought quite a lot of digital land, which in the game is represented as ERC-721 format token. These are companies like Atari, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Binance, Smurfs, Square Enix.

Therefore, The Sandbox can be seen not as just another blockchain game, but rather as a serious investment project. Before deciding whether to invest in The Sandbox, it is worth consulting a financial expert. At the very least, it is worthwhile to study what this project is all about.

Advantages and Disadvantages of  The Sandbox

Advantages

Disadvantages

  • Diverse market for in-game assets
  • One of the most popular NFT games
  • The Play to Earn system
  • Opportunity to earn cryptocurrency legally
  • Expensive enough for beginners
  • Only available on Windows for now

Tokens in The Sandbox

The Sandbox ecosystem uses several different tokens.

SAND is an ERC-20 service token that is used in transactions and interactions within the ecosystem. It can be used to buy assets and land, as well as to access paid games. With The Sandbox, the gas (commissions) payment in Ethereum is taken care of by the game, not by the users — the user experience is smoother. You can buy SAND on major exchanges like Binance or Uniswap. You can also earn new coins by stacking in liquidity pools.

GEM and CATALYST are two ERC-20 service tokens that are needed to create assets. Both tokens are burned when used, and can be earned through stacking.

GEM—also used when setting up assets. Each ASSET has “sockets” into which GEMs can be placed. The more tokens, the more pronounced the property. For example, you create a horse that has 30 tokens in its Endurance slot and 50 in its Speed slot. Your horse will be fast, but not endurance.

CATALYST — determines the uniqueness level of the asset. The more of these tokens, the more “nests” ASSET has.

In the future, the management of The Sandbox should pass into the hands of the community. Owners of land and SAND tokens will be able to participate in future votes on platform management through a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO): to vote on adding new features, distributing fees, selling land, and so on.

A 10% commission is taken from each transaction in the system: half of the SAND goes to the pool for steaking, and half goes to a special fund that provides grants to game and entertainment projects in the game.

How exactly I can make money in The Sandbox?

Players in The Sandbox build their own universe from in-game elements in the form of NFTs. Various elements are available to them - water, earth, animals, people, and machines. Some elements can be combined with each other to create new ones.

For example, in The Sandbox you can create mud from water and earth, build a shelter from trees, create a horse and become a rider. Or you can build an entire magical kingdom with dragons or a block of virtual casinos. Such universes can be saved, and their elements can be traded on the marketplace inside The Sandbox or exchanged with other players. You can also customize the items you create inside The Sandbox. For example, you created a dragon - then you can configure its physical parameters, speed and height of flight. Moreover, according to the developers' plan, in future it will be possible to exchange the in-game NFT's items with the users of other games. Also you can create a unique game on your land that other users can play.

Thus, The Sandbox allows players to earn by selling in-game elements and items, virtual real estate as well as their own games.

The Sandbox Gameplay

Describing the gameplay of The Sandbox is not an easy task. Because of the opportunities given to the player, this project is not a game in the literal sense of the word.

So, the entire gameplay of The Sandbox can be divided into several components:

  • Creating an avatar;
  • The creation of the game;
  • Creating the NFT;
  • Traveling through game worlds.

The Sandbox Avatar

In games like Minecraft and The Sandbox, the player avatar is one of the most important elements of the game. The Sandbox website has a separate section dedicated to avatar creation. You can select it from the creators' presets, modify it to your liking, and arm it with necessary items.

The Sandbox Gamemaker

The Sandbox Gamemaker

To create your own worlds the developers of the game offer to use a special program - The Sandbox Gamemaker.

You can download it by following the link from a special page on the game's website. To work comfortably, the application requires a computer with the following characteristics:

  • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
  • OS: Windows 10
  • Processor: Quad Core 3GHz
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: 2 GB VRAM
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Storage: 2 GB available space

The Sandbox Gamemaker allows you to create your own 3D games of different genres with unique rules and game dynamics. You don't need to know programming to use Game Maker.

On the application page, you can check out the games that other players have created.

To learn more about how The Sandbox Gamemaker works, watch the video below:

VoxEdit - NFT Creator

To create NFT items, the developers also offer a separate application called VoxEdit.

VoxEdit - NFT Creator

Download it on this page.

VoxEdit - allows you to create and animate 3D objects and assets: people, animals, tools, and so on. These assets exist in the form of ASSET tokens of the ERC-1155 standard and can be both regular interchangeable and NFT, i.e. non-interchangeable. It is assumed that in the future these game assets can be exported to other games, such as the same Minecraft.

Assets created in VoxEdit can be sold or traded in the Marketplace, the in-game trading platform of The Sandbox. Before trading, all assets must be uploaded to IPFS (InterPlanetary File System), a distributed storage system, a network of peer-to-peer nodes, each of which stores only a portion of the shared files of the entire system. Thanks to IPFS, these files can not be removed from the network and can not be changed without the permission of the owner.

Traveling through the game worlds.

The most important thing in games is to enjoy the gameplay. The Sandbox provides that to the fullest extent. Players can create many different game worlds. Sometimes players are joined by celebrities.

For example, in September 2021, rapper SnoopDogg presented his world in The Sandbox. You can get acquainted with the presentation of his game world in the video below.

The number of worlds in The Sandbox is constantly increasing, and exploring them is incredibly fun.

The Sandbox Team

The development team involved in the project is numerous and consists of employees working all over the world. But the core team of developers has remained unchanged for many years.

Whitepaper

The developers of The Sandbox take their game universe very seriously. And no wonder, because this project is mostly an investment one. That's why the creators of this NFT game compiled a very detailed documentation, which you can read at this link.

Disclaimer

Play-and-earn games can be highly risky because of the volatility of prices. It is worth remembering that the tokens used in The Sandbox are not only in-game currency, but also cryptocurrency traded on the exchange. This kind of investment requires a balanced approach. Gamers' investments in the game may suffer. We do not encourage you to invest your money in such products, and we are not responsible for lost funds. All investments you make at your own risk.
